Sringeri Sharada Peetha

The peetha is alternatively called the Dakshinamnaya Sharada Peetham. Out of 4 Hindu Advaita Mutts, this is one among them. All the four mutts were established by Adi Shankaracharya. The Mutt has a unique culture. The Yajur Veda is followed fervently here. The head of the Mutt decides on all the activities conducted here. Also called Jagadguru, this person is given all the sole rights to make decisions. The temple is located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in Chikmagalur district. The head of the Mutt has the word ‘Shankaracharya’ attested as a title. His seat is understood to be empowered with knowledge and wisdom. Based on this, the VyakhyanaSimhasana – the abode of learning comes under the aegis and control of the Jagadguru. Goddess Sharada’s sculpture is present here. This is the goddess of knowledge and wisdom. The Sringeri Sharada Peetha is located in one of most verdant surroundings. All around this place are lush green mountains. The Sahyadri mountain range can be seen overlooking the peetha.

The primary objective of the Mutt is to impart knowledge and wisdom. The learning is generally religious but with the objective of teaching everyone how to lead fruitful lives. Scriptures are recited here at particular times. People sit and listen to the recital. Qualified speakers speak to the audience about what was explained in these scriptures. The swamis here believe themselves to be disciples of Adi Shankaracharya. They follow in his footsteps and impart continuous scripture-based life learning. The Mutt has been a place of patronage for famous and powerful people from time immemorial. Kings and rulers visited this place frequently. The Sringeri Sharada Peetha was also favoured by the Muslim ruler Tipu Sultan. A number of grants were provided by him for the proliferation of the peetha’s activities. Till date, this place retains the glory of an illustrious past.
